How to secure a pharmacist job
Securing a pharmacist job is quite competitive in Australia so it pays to be well-prepared.
Before the interview
Make notes and write questions
Prepare for your pharmacy job interview by writing lots of notes and writing potential questions that an interviewer may ask. This will ensure you’re ready to answer these questions if they come up. Some possible questions include:
- Why do you want a career in pharmacy?
- Where do you see yourself in five years?
- Do you have plans to specialise in a particular area?
- Why have you chosen to apply for this job?
- Tell us about your strengths / weaknesses?
- Where have you worked previously?
- What do you know about our organisation/pharmacy?
- Why do you want to leave your current job?
- What will you bring to this job?
- What script numbers have you worked with?
- What computer systems have you worked with in your career so far?
It’s also a good idea to practise answering these questions or forming your response. That way, you won’t flounder in the interview.
Know how to get there
Make sure you know where the interview will be held, how to get there, and how long it will take to get there. Also, familiarise yourself with the parking situation, and allow plenty of time for unexpected delays.
On the day
Dress appropriately
Wear clothing that’s comfortable, yet professional. Feeling good about how you look will give you confidence. Opt for closed-in shoes and avoid jeans, and clothes that are too casual or revealing, if you want every chance of securing that pharmacy job.
Eat before you go
Even if nerves are getting the better of you, try to eat something. It will help you think clearer, and will stop any embarrassing tummy grumbles during your job interview.
At the interview
Have positive body language
Shake the interviewer’s hand, greet them with a smile, and make eye contact when walking into your interview. It’s also important to keep making eye contact throughout the interview.
Be confident
Confidently discuss your resume, and ensure you talk about relevant experience or skills you have, that match the criteria for the pharmacy position. This is the time for you to put your best foot forward, so don’t be shy.
Be enthusiastic
Engage with the interviewer or interview panel by being enthusiastic about the pharmacy job on offer, but don’t be over the top. Ask questions about the organisation, or the position itself.
